Medicare Plans in Alabama
This is a subtitle for your new post
Medicare plans in Alabama are not one-size-fits-all. In 2026, Cullman County has dozens of Medicare Advantage options, including many $0-premium plans, and the list changes by ZIP code. The right plan is the one that covers your doctors, your prescriptions, and your budget for 2027. Annual Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Anything you change takes effect January 1, 2027.
Plan premiums, copays, and drug costs are not listed here. They vary by plan, county, and pharmacy, and pricing is subject to change. Call 256-692-5771 to find out the pricing at your address. A licensed insurance agent will answer.
Assister Health Benefits is an independent local office at 1928 MarktPlatz Center SW in Cullman. Sonya Fortner, Penny Aldridge, and Samantha Whatley help families in Cullman County and across North Alabama compare Medicare Advantage, Medigap, and Part D. The review is free to you. You do not pay the office a fee.
We do not offer every plan available in your area. Currently we represent 8 organizations which offer 65 products in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov, 1-800-MEDICARE, or your local State Health Insurance Program (SHIP) to get information on all of your options.
Who needs to look at Medicare plans in Alabama this fall?
Anyone already on Medicare should look, even if last year’s plan felt fine. Plans change their drug lists, doctor networks, premiums, and out-of-pocket limits every year. A plan that covered your specialist in 2026 may not cover that same doctor in 2027.
You should also look if any of these fit:
- You are turning 65 and have not picked a plan yet.
- You are retiring and losing employer coverage.
- You moved into or out of Cullman, Huntsville, Madison, Athens, or another Alabama county.
- A prescription got expensive, or a new one was added.
- Your doctor left the network, or you want a hospital in Huntsville or Birmingham that your plan does not treat as in-network.
- You qualified for Extra Help or a Medicare Savings Program and have not updated your drug coverage.
People who are new to Medicare get a 7-month Initial Enrollment Period: the three months before the birthday month, the birthday month, and the three months after. Missing that window can mean late penalties and a gap in coverage. A move, a loss of employer coverage, or a few other life events can open a Special Enrollment Period outside the fall window.
What are the Medicare plan choices in Alabama?
Alabama residents on Medicare usually choose between two paths. Benefits and availability vary by plan and location. Not all plans offer all of these benefits.
Original Medicare plus a supplement and a drug plan. Part A covers hospital stays. Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient care. Most people who worked at least 40 quarters pay no Part A premium. A Medigap policy can help pay deductibles and coinsurance that Original Medicare leaves behind. A separate Part D plan covers prescriptions. Medigap does not use a provider network. If the doctor takes Medicare, the supplement generally follows. Medigap premiums are set by the company and are subject to change. Call 256-692-5771 to find out pricing.
Medicare Advantage (Part C). These are private plans that replace Original Medicare for day-to-day coverage. Hospice stays with Original Medicare. Many Advantage plans in Alabama bundle drug coverage and extras such as dental, vision, hearing, or a gym benefit. You still pay the Part B premium. Some plans add a $0 plan premium. A $0 premium is not free care. Copays, a drug deductible, and an out-of-pocket maximum still apply, and those amounts are subject to change. In return, you usually have a network and prior authorizations.
Neither path is automatically better. A retired teacher who sees three specialists in Huntsville may want the freedom of a supplement. A couple on a fixed income who uses in-network doctors in Cullman may do better on a low-premium Advantage plan with their drugs on a low tier. The only honest answer comes from checking doctors and prescriptions against the plans sold at that address. Call us and we will run that check with you.
What does Medicare cost in Alabama in 2026?
The amounts in this table are federal Original Medicare costs set by CMS. They are the same in Cullman as they are in Mobile. Your income can raise the Part B and Part D bill through IRMAA. Extra Help or a Medicare Savings Program can lower it.
Private plan pricing is different. Medicare Advantage premiums, Medigap premiums, Part D premiums, copays, coinsurance, and pharmacy costs vary by plan and county. Pricing is subject to change. Call 256-692-5771 to find out the pricing available at your address.

Plan-comparison data drawn from CMS files shows about 39 Medicare Advantage plans in Cullman County for 2026, and many include a $0 monthly plan premium. Counts leave out some Special Needs Plans and can differ in Huntsville, Madison, Athens, and rural North Alabama ZIP codes. Do not pick from a statewide list. Call 256-692-5771 and we will run the comparison for your address.
Medicare Advantage or Medigap: which fits North Alabama?
Ask three questions before you look at a premium. We will price the plans that fit. Pricing is subject to change, and we do not publish a rate on this page.
Will my doctors take it? Write down every doctor you expect to see in 2027, including the cardiologist, the eye doctor, and the hospital you would actually drive to. On a Medicare Advantage HMO, out-of-network care is usually not covered except in an emergency. On a PPO, you can go out of network, but you will pay more. On Medigap, the question is simpler: does the doctor accept Medicare?
What will my prescriptions cost at my pharmacy? A plan can look cheap and still cost more once the formulary is applied. Insulin, blood thinners, inhalers, and newer diabetes drugs are where people get surprised. Bring the bottle or the printout from the pharmacy. The drug name, dose, and how often you fill it all matter. Call us and we will price those drugs on the plans we represent.
What is the worst year, not the best month? A $0 premium with a high out-of-pocket maximum is a trade. If you are healthy, you may never get near that cap. If you already know you need a surgery or infusions, the cap and the copays matter more than the premium. Those caps differ by plan. Call for the number on the plans available at your address.
People in and around Cullman often want to keep a local primary doctor and still have a path to specialists in Huntsville. That is a network question, not a brand question. It is also why a plan that works for a neighbor can be a poor fit for you.
What can you change from October 15 to December 7?
Fall Open Enrollment runs October 15 through December 7, 2026. Changes start January 1, 2027. During that window you can move from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage, move back, switch Advantage plans, or join, drop, or switch a Part D plan.
You generally cannot use this window to buy a Medigap policy with the same guaranteed-issue rights you had when you first enrolled. In Alabama, the easiest time to get a supplement without health questions is the six-month Medigap open enrollment period that starts the month you are 65 and enrolled in Part B. After that, companies can ask health questions. If you are thinking about leaving Medicare Advantage for a supplement, ask about underwriting before you disenroll. Call 256-692-5771 and we will tell you whether a supplement is still an option and what the premium would be.
If an Advantage plan chosen this fall is a bad fit, the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period runs January 1 through March 31, 2027. In that window you can switch Advantage plans or return to Original Medicare, with or without a Part D plan. You cannot use it to hop from one stand-alone drug plan to another.
How a local review actually works
- Discovery call. Doctors, prescriptions, pharmacies, and what worried you last year. No forms first.
- Custom analysis. The plans we represent at your Alabama address are checked against that list. Advantage, Medigap, and Part D are all on the table. We price them on the call. Pricing is subject to change.
- Review and enroll. Tradeoffs in plain language, including premium, copays, and drug cost. If you enroll, the application is submitted with you.
- Annual review. Another look before the next December 7, plus help with claims, appeals, and network changes. That follow-up is part of the service, not an extra fee.
Sonya Fortner leads plan strategy and has helped hundreds of Alabama families find coverage that fits. Penny Aldridge has more than 30 years of experience and is who clients call when they do not want to feel hurried. Samantha Whatley is a client advocate and a registered nurse, which helps when a coverage question is really a care question.
The office is independent. It is not an insurance company, and it is not Medicare. Call 256-692-5771 or visit 1928 MarktPlatz Center SW, Cullman, AL 35055. Calling this number will connect you with a licensed insurance agent.
What to bring
- Your Medicare card, or the date Part A and Part B start
- Every prescription, with dose and how often you refill it
- The pharmacy you want to keep
- Names of doctors and the hospital you prefer
- Last year’s plan name, and any letter that said the plan is changing
- A rough monthly budget for premiums and copays
You do not need to know an HMO from a PPO before you call. We will pull current pricing while you are on the phone.
Common mistakes we see in Cullman County
Choosing the plan a friend likes. Same town, different doctors. Their $0 plan can leave your specialist out of network.
Looking only at the premium. Copays, the drug deductible, and the out-of-pocket maximum decide the year. Call us and we will put those numbers next to the premium.
Waiting until the second week of December. Applications can still be taken on December 7, but doctor and drug checks take time.
Assuming a dental extra replaces a dentist you already like. Extra benefits have limits and are not on every plan. Ask what the benefit actually pays.
Leaving employer coverage without a written end date. Retirement timing controls the Special Enrollment Period. Guessing creates gaps.
Free help, and help from a local office
Alabama SHIP, through the Alabama Department of Senior Services, offers free counseling and does not sell plans. You can also compare every plan at Medicare.gov or by calling 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY 1-877-486-2048), 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
A local office does something different. Assister Health Benefits represents 8 organizations and 65 products in this area, sits down with your doctor and drug list, prices the plans we offer, helps with the application, and stays on the file after January 1.
